For some people a visit to the doctor isn't complete unless they leave with a prescription in hand, but smart patients know there are some illnesses that won't necessarily benefit from medication.
Many people think antibiotics are a cure-all for everything from the common cold up, but the truth is there are still some diseases that will benefit only from time and rest. |

Antibiotics can only be used to treat bacterial infections and will not work against viruses, so if your Pegasus GP recommends a course of treatment that does not involve antibiotics, it is because he or she has diagnosed a condition that will not respond to them. Last time I had the 'flu my doctor told me just to rest and wouldn't give me prescription. Why? Many common illnesses, including head colds, flu and laryngitis, are caused by viruses. These viruses don't respond to antibiotics, so there is no point in taking them. Antibiotics can only be used to treat bacterial infections. If you are suffering from a viral infection your doctor will probably not prescribe an antibiotic for you unless you develop complications. |
